Karen grew up in Regent Park, Toronto and went to Park Public School (now renamed Nelson Mandela Park P.S.), she has lived in both the poorest neighborhoods of Toronto as well as it's "richest" one, and knows the difference.. Karen remains active within enviro/community/social and political organizations, she is a fan of good public policy, not partisanship, and hopes to develop a career within the private, public or non-profit sector that works in areas of environmental or community development. Karen believes change can happen within the system as well as with pressure from outside. Simply voting or changing a lightbulb cannot change the world, it requires more civic involvement... Karen's short academic, volunteer and career life has brought her to working with groups like the Liberal Party of Canada, the Green Party of Canada, Frontier College Literacy Group, her school's student course unions, starting an Oxfam Canada Chapter at her university, helping run a not-for-profit fair trade cafe called Caffiends as well as working for Essence of Life Organics, the City of Toronto, the Daily Bread Food Bank, the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and the Big Carrot Natural Food Market. Karen would like to point out that organic is not synonymous with: human rights, environmental sustainability or being healthy. Neither is local. Karen would like to get more involved with local civic participation and community groups. Her limited life experience has taught her that change is only possible with: - active citizens - effective states Contact: karenj.cao@live.ca
