About Me   About Me
Being young women based in global south my identity and my risk perception brought me into the world of development. Joining in the small support group for student combating ragging in my college I grew up, organize my self and my community and started understanding the power of participation. In all of my work and analysis the basic is participation and by participation I would like to develop the perspective- the youth perspective. Developing proper community perspective will be the key for progress. I started working with HIV/AIDS intervention program in early 1998 with an understanding that discriminated populations probably have among the most valuable insights on HIV/AIDS. Young people make up about 50% of the new infections that is over 6000 every day. Yet, we find ourselves discriminated against and excluded from most decision-making processes. We, young people, have indeed again and again shown our strong capacities and commitment to stop HIV/ AIDS – but sadly only when we are invited to the table. We and other discriminated populations have a right to be there, a right too often denied. We, the members of populations discriminated against, are not vulnerable. Indeed, we are strong, capacitated and share a strong commitment to contribute to the fight against HIV and AIDS. The reason people are vulnerable to HIV and AIDS is not because they are young, or homosexuals, or sex workers or injecting drug users. We are not somehow extra vulnerable to the virus. Yet, we carry the heaviest burden of the pandemic, because society repeatedly denies us access to sexuality education, commodities for contraception and decision-making when it comes to HIV and AIDS-programmes.In 2003, I found an organization called People Like Us (PLUS) Kolkata to representing the experiences and realities of marginalized and vulnerable adolescent and young men in India, PLUS (People Like Us -kolkata) is a support group of young people working for the promotion, protection and advancement of adolescent and youth health and rights, especially their sexual and reproductive health and rights, toward ensuring their meaningful participation and perspectives at all levels of decision-making. i was also being part of various youth delegation at UN and UNESCAP. On the issue of rights, a lot of debate focused on the need to strike a balance between the autonomy and universality of rights and the contexts that surround the realization of these rights. We should begin to name sexual rights without shame, as what is unnamed is more likely to be unsupported, ignored or misunderstood. I have been leading the youth and sexuality, identity, health and rights movement in India and in the region since then.
