About Me

Julie Upmeyer is artist and initiator based in Istanbul. Working independently and with various local and international partners, she generates projects, events, explorations, artworks and experience-based research.

Upmeyer has been involved with the arts throughout her life, from a young age she was involved with Arts & Scraps, an arts organization in Detroit, USA that uses industrial scrap as creative and educational material. Her work as an artist has been highly influenced by this repurposing of everyday materials, with an emphasis on interaction and process-based practice. Her interest in alternative spaces for art generation and exhibition lead to her involvement with Res Artis, the international network of artist residencies, and a three-year nomadic life - working on various projects and with residential art spaces and festivals in India, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Greece.

Having been first invited to Istanbul, Turkey as an artist-in-resident, she has now returned, making it a base for her artistic practice. She has initiated Caravansarai, a project space and meeting point, organising events, projects, workshops, collaborations and feasts, producing programing for the internet-based TV station 'Caravansarai Istanbul TV' - CITV .

Caravansarai is an open platform, creating projects that explore interaction in its many forms – between people and with spaces and materials. Our major project - The Virtual Chef - explores the combination of online presence and material life with an edible interactive experience. The Virtual Chef is participatory cooking event in which a chef in another country instructs us how to make a meal here in Istanbul.
