Joel has recently completed a four year term as a member of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's National Advisory Council, completing his term in the role of Deputy Convenor. He has a strong interest in current affairs, arts and educational programming. Joel is an active member of the Queensland Teachers' Union, having served on Area and State Councils and held various branch positions. He currently sits on the State Educational Leaders' Committee and holds the position of Senior Union Representative for North Queensland. Joel is an accredited Team Chair with the Council of International Schools and travels to other schools within Australia and overseas to assist in their accreditation. Joel is married and he and his wife have two young sons. Before his appointment to Pioneer State High School in 2011, Joel was Deputy Principal of Kirwan State High School, one of the largest secondary schools in Queensland. Joel oversaw a range of portfolio areas, including Vocational Education, International Education and eLearning and Information Technology. Joel led the school's accreditation with the Council of International Schools, the development of the North Queensland Minerals and Energy Trade Training Centre and the establishment of Kirwan High's International Student Program. Before working at Kirwan High, Joel was the Head of Department (English and Social Sciences) at Thursday Island State High School, where he oversaw the development of literacy strategies and a common assessment and moderation framework across the Torres Strait. Joel maintains a strong interest in issues pertaining to Indigenous education. Prior to this, Joel began his teaching career in 2001 as English Coordinator at Calen P-12 State School. Joel completed a Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Central Queensland University, completing his honours thesis on pre-service teachers' engagement with discourses of critical literacy. Joel also completed a Graduate Certificate in Cultural Studies at the Pusan National University of Education while studying and teaching in South Korea on a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade scholarship.
