I am orginally from Oregon, but have spent the past 6 1/2 years living in New York. My whole family still lives in Oregon, so I go back on a regular basis. I have 7 adorable nieces and nephews that I love to see as much as possible. I am a former super nanny extraordinare to three great kids ages 10, 8 and 6 1/2 who live in New York. I was their nanny for 7 1/2 years and love them dearly but after a lot of thought decided I wanted to do something different. It was very a difficult separation for all of us but I left my job in May so that I can return to school this fall to study Social Work. I left in May so that I could take the summer off to volunteer and travel. I spent the month of June in Bankhwao, Thailand (5 hourse NE of Bangkok) as a volunteer English teacher. I didn't see another foreigner the whole time I was there, so I really got immersed in the culture. Everyone was so welcoming and sweet to me, always inviting me over to their houses for lunch, dinner, to spend the night, etc.... I met some great people, ate wonderful food and learned to speak basic Thai all at the same time. I was lucky and got to teach at two different schools as most of the volunteers only teach at one school. The first was a public secondary school, so my students were ages 12-17. I rotated amongst all the classes and grades here, so I taught every student at least once while I was there. I was very nervous at first as I don't have much experience with this age group or even teaching in general. I quickly caught on and got the hang of making lesson plans and teaching. I ended up loving teaching at the secondary school and was very glad I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone for this experience. The second school I got to teach at was a private kindergarten/nursery school. My students here were ages 2 1/2-7 years old. I was a lot more comfortable here for me as I have lots of experience with children this age. The kids here were just so sweet, cute and loving and were always so excited to see me. Just like kids everywhere else, they just liked to have fun and be silly. My lessons here were very basic with lots of songs and games. I often spent my free time in their class rooms and out on the play ground just hanging out with the teachers and students here. I was sad when it was time for me to leave Bankhwao, but happy that I got the chance to live and teach there. I spent the month of July traveling around Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. I loved each country and had a great time. They each have similarities but are very different at the same time. I met some great people along the way and made some wonderful new friends.
