I took Marketing and International Business and it seemed to go well- I did well, I enjoyed it, I received alot of respect from my professors and internship leaders. I was given the opportunity for a good internship post-graduation, it was very enticing indeed! Unfortunately, as I was trying to find the right "fit" and university quickly started coming to a close I started to worry that I could make the wrong decision. How could I decide what I wanted without fulfilling some of my dreams first- travel, volunteering- but how could I put those two together? 3am one morning I applied to YCI - and got into the Guyana, South America program for 8 weeks in October 2005. I declined my internship to attend the program- and I've never regret it. It has shaped my life. I actually missed my graduation ceremony to go- at the point when I was to walk on stage and receive my diploma - I was bouncing around the back of a Bedford truck in the middle of the Guyanese jungle on my way to start my adventure with 12 perfect strangers. I now work in Marketing and Communications for a dynamic fairtrade organisation- I am assisting in the launch into the UK market- giving nut farmers in third world countries access to market. Going to South America and volunteering has made me acutely aware of the world I live in, and it has become almost impossible not to dedicate myself to make a difference People over profits, even when referring to me personally! Over two years passed since my life changing experience- it's time to go volunteer again to regain my focus to see what direction my life will take me in next.
