Julia Emanuel is involved with the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA, http://tigurl.org/8a7ika), an international alliance of young people addressing HIV/AIDS in 150 countries worldwide. She is a recent graduate of Yale University.
Julia's work with HIV/AIDS began in 2002 when she spent the summer in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. She worked in the pediatric HIV/AIDS wards of Northdale and Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
Julia returned to Southern Africa in 2006 to work with the South East District Council in Ramotswa, Botswana. She was involved in the organization of an inter-village youth soccer program. Within this soccer league, Julia worked to incorporate HIV/AIDS education through sports and peer education using the Kicking AIDS Out concept. She also assisted in the organization of HIV/AIDS education workshops in Ramotswa and she spent time volunteering at the Siga Home-Based Care clinic and the BLH Batalete Lutheran Hospital.
Julia is interested in pursuing a career in global public health or medicine and hopes to return to Southern Africa in the near future.
