Petition Description

My petition is about doing more compost in the town of Rosemere. This city is already engaged to improve the environment in many ways. For example, Rosemere has a high recycling rate, one of the best in the MRC . It is also forbidden to use any kind of pesticide on the grass and we have to leave the grass pieces on the ground when we mow the lawn in order to reduce the use of trucks and to enhance the quality of our lawn, because grass is a natural fertilizer. Rosemere also encourages the citizens to compost by explaining the benefits of it. The problem is that composting isn’t done by the majority of the population. Therefore, by offering the service of recuperating the compost just like the usual recycling service, more people will make an effort to compost, because the town of Rosemere would offer to take it. I do compost at home, but even if I have two compost buckets, I still have too much compost and that’s why offering this service is a good idea.

Details, Impact and Progress

Composting is a natural process that transforms the organic material in a kind of earth. This earth is called the compost. The two major actors in that process are the mushrooms and the micro-organisms. Indeed, they have the ability to decompose the organic material into simple elements that can feed the plants. Composting is easy to do at home and if you do it, you will reduce about the third of your domestic garbage . It’s a great way to improve the environment, because when your garbage are dumped at landfill sites or burned, it hurts the environment, because it generates greenhouse gases. So when you compost, instead of producing greenhouse gases, you help the soil to have more organic material in it and you help it improve his water retention. Also, the compost contributes to the growth of the plants and the flowers. The Canadian government programs of recycling and composting can keep away 29 % of solid waste of the landfill sites. However, 71 % are still getting to those sites or they are being burned. The landfill sites are responsible for about the quarter of the emissions of methane in Canada. The methane is one of the three main gases present in the greenhouse gases (the two others are carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide). Even if the carbon dioxide is more important in quantity in the atmosphere, the methane is more dangerous. Indeed, it is 21 times more detrimental when we talk about the global-warming potential. In conclusion, composting contributes to reduce the greenhouse gases and it improves the quality of the soil. That’s why Rosemere should offer to recuperate the compost from every citizen.
