this is an article that I posted on Panorama: Situation of African population By Guillaume Plourde and Maxime Trempe A lot of people in industrialized countries only care about their own comfort and don’t want to see problem of others. That’s why they don’t even know what is happening in poor countries. Always focused on local news, majority of person don’t know what is the real situation of life for people that live in those poor countries. As you know, 1/3 of earth population is under the poverty line, but do you know why? We are not kind of person that are always implicated and try to lead environmental motion or humanitarian’s projects. We are more the people that fallow the leader and make little think to try to make positively changes. That’s why we decided to wrote this article to increase knowledge about the problem of poverty in Africa. We chose this issue because we think that poverty shouldn’t exist. To know about this problem in Africa, we decided to meet a missionary sister of the “Immaculé Conception”. She told us some stories about Africans she taught to. Without being teacher herself, she taught to those Africans how to read, count and role of family mothers. She even taught sexual problems with them to prevent AIDS. By living in this country, she really saw how important the poverty problem is. We discussed a lot about this poverty problem with her and we have been surprised by the main cause of this poverty. We realized that we were totally uncultivated about the real reasons of problems in Africa. Like the majority of population of industrialized countries think that Africa is poor because they don’t have money. Actually, the main reason why the Africans live in bad condition is not because they don’t have money, it’s because they cannot invest in the right place. In fact, the money gained in exportation is lower than the debt cost. When you compare exportation and debt cost you easily see that the debt of a lot of African countries is higher: %higher of debt compare to exportation1 Burundi: 1 792% Guinée Bissau: 1 604% Mozambique : 1 115% Rwanda : 1 216% Sierra Leone : 1 736% Soudan : 1 832% . In numbers, the sub-Saharan debt went from 60 billion to more than 200 billion in 20 years even if the under continent paid more than 229 billion, that is more than 4 times the initial debt. Just to compare, Africa invest 4 times more in debt than in education and health combined. The debt is obviously the main obstacle to the human needs contentment in Africa. Because of it, they can’t have access to clean water, to good health care, to a basic accommodation and to a good education. In 2002, more than 320 millions people of the African’s population live with less than one dollar a day! 300 millions of Africans doesn’t have an access to clean water and 210 millions of them are suffering from hunger. Even worst than that, each years, about 5, 5 millions of African kids died because of these missing human needs. A lot of studies have been made about Africa. One of them is pretty percussive. It has been realized by the United Nation Development Program. They have determined that if the situation in Africa doesn’t change soon, the universal primary schooling would only happen in 2129! This is in 113 years! Also, the objective of reducing 67% of the infant mortality would happen in 2106 instead of 2017, like it was suppose to be. To reduce the poverty, the hunger and to increase the health care, the UNDP were not even to know when it would happen because the situation in Africa is always degrading. Also, because of the debt, Africa isn’t able to develop himself. Because they have to pay the debt, they don’t have money to put into new technologies that could help them to take out of poverty. Contrary to the majority of the rest of the world, who are always developing their technologies and who are industrialized countries or who are near of it, the African’s countries can’t even think of industrialisation because the majority of their money goes into the debt. With all that said, it’s time for industrialized countries and people from these to do something to help the African population. They have money; they need education to be less dependent toward other countries. There is many way to be involved in this cause. There is also different degree of involvement. First, you have to know that giving money to foundation is a good way but not the best. As we explained it earlier, they don’t really need money, they want education to become independent and maybe refund the debt. Giving money to African people helps them on the economic way but when they receive money without doing anything, they cannot learn how to work. If you want to give money and make the difference, give to the “soeur missionnaire de l’Immaculé Conception”, with your money, they buy books, pencils and other things to help students on Africa to learn. If you are able to make a trip to Africa and help some foundation to educate them, this is the best way you can help them. For our part, we want to be respectively: engineer and accountant, so we could do a difference if we do an educative trip to Africa. But we are always in school so we do as much as possible, with all we know, and we think that 2 voices are better than one. So we decide to write this little article to sensitize the population with this bad situation in Africa. If 2 voices are better than one, 10 000 or even more is way better. If all persons that have read this article make a little action to help and change this situation, it is a miracle! But if all persons that have read this article know more about this situation and talk with others about this article and this cause, we did all we wanted.
