 About Me |
My name is Genevieve but a lot of people call me Johnnie, I'm 24 and living in Portland Oregon. I grew up not far from here in a magical place called Estacada. Not having much around, I have always turned to my animals for company and now I find myself volunteering three days a week at the local zoo. Some things never change. :)I heard about Project Borneo only four days ago and its all I can think about.
A year ago I was doing a internship with the primate keepers at the Oregon Zoo and I fell in love with our orangs. One in particular. Batik was something special, her gentle demeanor and funny antics captivated all who met her. She made me laugh everyday. With a heavy heart I tell you she has since passed away but she left behind something in me. A passion to do better by these apes who are so much like us. The worst part about her death is that she didn't even get to feel fresh air. The original exhibit was outdated since the primate building is the oldest still standing at the zoo. We were in the process of building a multi-species exhibit for the orangutans and gibbons and with only months to go she got sick. I want to help orangutans feel fresh air, I want to help them be free. So, for now I am a poop-scooping, floor scrubbing, fruit chopper by day and a waitress by night. But I am made for so much more and one day I will make a difference.
