Koroma is man who make me i am today, lovely father, caring I am currently working for vision for the blind sierra Leone VISION FOR THE BLIND SIERRA LEONE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The organization is working to: • Reduce the high level of illiteracy and street begging among the blind people in Sierra Leone; • Make education available and accessible, free of charge to all blind children; • Help blind people overcome the impediment of blindness so that they become productive and self reliant; and • Fight against discrimination in all its ugly forms. VISION FOR THE BLIND S.L. BACKGROUND Vision for the Blind is a local voluntary organization, set up to promote and seek the interest of the blind people in Sierra Leone, especially women, children and young people. It was set up in October 2003 by a group of blind teachers who had the vision of a country in which everyone who is blind has the same rights, opportunities and responsibility as those who are sighted. In December 2003 Vision for the blind was registered as a community based organization (CBO) with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs. The organization further registered with the Ministry of Youths and Sports, and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development through the Freetown City Council and the Bombali District Council Respectively.. It is currently operating in Freetown where it has its headquarters at 6 Rokel Street and in the Northern Province, with an office in Makeni and focal points in every district in the country. ACTIVITIES The organization undertakes the following activities: • Advocacy and lobbying: Vision for the blind advocates for the rights of the blind at all levels. • Sensitization: Vision for the blind sensitize the public on the rights, responsibilities and abilities of the blind through radio and television panel discussions and community outreach programmes. Additionally the organization does HIV / AIDS prevention and awareness raising campaign amongst differently able persons with emphasis on the blind and visually impaired. Outreach team Service Provision: Make education available and accessible, free of charge to all blind children. This is done through the regular visits VFB volunteers makes to the villages and other rural areas in search of abandoned children. NETWORKING Vision for the blind is a member of some Civil Society organization networks like; Coalition for Civil Society and Human Rights Activist, Youth Alliance for Peace and Development(YAPAD), Disability Awareness Action Group (DAAG) and also partner to SHAIN Foundation NL. and SL. Powerful Information U.K. • Vocational Skills Training: Vision for the blind also runs a vocational skills training programme for blind adults who are otherwise above school going age. These blind adults are trained in soap making, weaving and handicraft. On completion of their training, they are being equipped with startup kits as a way of sustaining their livelihood. ABANDONED CHILDREN`S abandoned blind children who are then sent to different schools for the blind in Sierra Leone. .
