Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and is now regarded as the third largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world, a multi-billion dollar industry. The U.S. States Department estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year, with current estimates of 14,500 to 17,500 persons trafficked into the U.S. annually.
In January of 2005, Campus Coalition Against Trafficking (CCAT) was launched to mobilize grassroots community efforts and engage college campus and other student youth and anti-trafficking projects in their communities and abroad.
The main goal of CCAT is to build the anti-trafficking movement by training emerging leaders, fostering youth empowerment, raising awareness about human trafficking, and encouraging cross-sectoral linkages among social justice issues.
