About me
I was born and raised as the son of a park ranger in West Virginia, living in a log cabin until I was 15 years old. I’m a mix of home grown values and progressive urban politics with a splash of passion, experience, and humor. I'm interested social and environmental justice issues, particularly in regards to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. Also committed to environmental education and fighting social inequity. I finished a BS in Zoology from the University of Florida, and I currently in the west of Ireland doing postgraduate studies in zoology. I just finished a year working in Washington, DC for 20/20 Vision, dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting disarmament, and National Geographic. As an undergrad, I was able to study tropical reforestation in Australia, run a nature center at a summer camp, and develop interpretative materials for the new zoo development project at the Baltimore Zoo. Last summer I worked for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association in their Government Affairs department conducting legislative research and doing programmatic writing. Although I am a passionate animal welfare activist, I strongly believe that zoos and aquariums are important cultural institutions and with improved management they can wholeheartedly serve as socially progressive institutions of conservation and education. When I am not getting mad at the world or working on wildlife issues, I enjoying being outdoors, hiking, playing my saxophone Charlene, and fire dancing. I hope later sometime to go into public policy or law as it is a mastery of the legal language that I need to ensure that policies and government are accountable to animals and their environment.
