volunteered for the American Red Cross, Greater Hartford,Connecticut branch. As a volunteer I undertook approximately 20 ARC certificates. While a mature student at the University of Connecticut I assisted in the 2004 Tsunami Relief efforts on behalf of the International Office. I quickly became friends with the Sri Lankan students. Because of my involvment, I vowed to travel to Sri Lanka. I moved to the U.K. in September 2005 to be part of Nottingham University's MSc. Social Work program. At that time, I became involved with the British Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Service where I assist people who have been affected by local disasters. In January 2006 I transferred to Coventry University in their MSc Disaster Management program which will be completed in February 2007. My dissertation is entitled "Incorporating Disaster Management Education into Sri Lankan schools. In 2006, I completed my research by traveling to Sri Lanka. I will be returning to Sri Lanka in February 2007 where I will be interning for the Disaster Relief Monitoring Unit. I hope to become a volunteer with the Sri Lankan Red Cross. All this and I am 59 years of age. |
