Ugenya is in Siaya District (US President Obama's ancestral land), Nyanza Province, Kenya. According to the Kenya Demographic & Health Survey of 2003, Ugenya has a poppulation of 180,752 people, with 81,992 males and 98,992 females. There are a total of 44,484 households, with the average number of people in each household being four. 21,348 households are headed by women, as either their husbands are dead from HIV/AIDS, or are in the cities in search of employment opportunities. About 1850 households are child headed. Ugenya has a crude birth rate of 56.8/1000, a crude death rate of 17.8/1000, life expectancy of 43 years, a high infant mortality rate at 113/1000, an under 5 mortality rate at 102/1000 and a total fertility of 4.3. 60% are living below poverty line, as compared to 41% in 1994. Ugenya has only one medical doctor, Dr. Fred Okango, who is employed, full time, by Matibabu Foundation (Kenya). Our Vision: A healthy and prosperous community where women and children no longer suffer nor die of preventable diseases and causes. Our Mission: To provide quality comprehensive, sustainable and affordable health care services for the rural groups in Ugenya and its environs through women and child friendly community-based health and development programs. Our Objectives: a) HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support b) Malaria prevention, control and curative services c) Women health services d)Adolecent reproductive health e) Pediatric care services Achievements: Received in 2007 US President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) grant to reduce HIV prevelance; We have qualified children, women and youth friendly human resources for health; we have functional clinics in Ukwala and Nzoia; and we have offerred our services to over 50,000 population in Ugenya. We are in the processes of constructing a 200 bed capacity hospital for women and children. The Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, and Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, laid the foundation stone in 25th July, 2009.
