About Me   About Me
After getting back from a five week trip to India this summer, I have been deeply engaged in literature and activities involving social justice. I have a deep interest in gaining perspective on different cultures, and identifying the similarities between them. I am also intently interested on the topic of religion and faith, being an issue that has defined and created the best (Barack Obama and Mother Teresa) and the worst (Osama Bin Ladin and other Al-Queda operatives) of this generation, I feel that it is a source of many profound truths and un-truths.

Being involved with Social Justice over the past year, I have done a lot of advocating the Canadian Government to act on the Genocide that is occurring in Darfur. I led efforts that amounted to the collection of 6 000 signatures worth of petitions which were presented in the House of Commons. This project took much energy and consisted of cross-Canada networking and countless presentations. After a while, I became discouraged with advocacy. The frustration of working with politicians who simply do not feel the same way that you do, and seem to be living in an entirely different world was quite disheartening. Being a member of the Conservative Party, I had also worked to push forward Darfur advocacy through the party. This was a test to the tenet of belief about conservative governments that I had held dear: to be socially active you must be fiscally responsible. However, it became clear at the Conservative National Convention in Winnipeg last November, that this was a far cry from an “if and only if” statement.

In realizing that the Conservative Party was no more inclined or in touch with the pressing social issues of our time than any other party, I cancelled my membership. In recent months, I have recognized the importance of tackling social justice from a broader perspective. I realized that social justice was not just a sprint to tackle one crisis, but a life-project that will change the social structure of the world. At my social justice club at Dawson College, we decided to embrace social justice in a more general way, aiming to engage in social justice more locally and broadening our agenda to encompass a long list of issues.

As I continue to develop my ideas in Montreal, I am greatly anticipating my trip to Accra, Ghana this summer. To meet and develop relationships with people of an entirely different cultural background will be amazing and undoubtedly will add on to my constantly evolving understandings.
