Once I completed my undergraduate degree, I began working at the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. This exposed me to the wide array of fields that existed within health. Within this role I organized a number of educational and advocacy-related events, directed at health care professionals, the general public, and/or parliamentarians. I also gained experience in the management of non-profits associations. After working, and learning, at the SOGC for almost three years, it was time to take another step in my education. I was looking for the knowledge and skills to be able to make a difference within the health sector. I left to pursue a Master of Public Health from the University of Waterloo, Canada. This MPH has provided me with a span of knowledge, including a wider, more multi-faceted understanding of politics, economics, and culture, along with an understanding of how these factors affect the development and functioning of health systems. During my MPH I had the opportunity to work on various practical projects, such as the development of an evaluation plan for Peel Public Health’s Video – Directly Observed Therapy Tuberculosis Program, as well as one for the Program and Training Consultation Center as a whole. Most recently I developed, along with some colleagues, a knowledge translation dissemination strategy for the Canadian Center for Addiction and Mental Health’s Turning the Key report. As well, having pursued my MPH work placement with an NGO in Santiago - Chile, I was able to gain invaluable experience working within a different country, environmental and cultural setting. Which brings us to now. I just finished my MPH and I am thinking about my next steps. Though I’m not sure what my dream job is at this point, I do know that I’m interested in health system strengthening as well as women’s health issues and those of marginalized populations. On a more personal note, I love snowboarding, volley ball, traveling and getting lost in a great book.
