Over Mij

I am a 20 year old Science major at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I have been volunteering in the area of HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive rights and health for many years. I am the National Focal Point - North America for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS. I have recently been accepted as an Action Partner for Oxfam International's Youth Partnerships Program. I will be traveling to Sydney, Australia to attend an International Youth Conference. We will be bringing together 300 youth from over 100 countries from around the world, with the aim of being 'A Global Force for Change'. I also volunteer with Oxfam Canada, and the AIDS committee of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since my appointment as an Action Partner, I have been jointly working with Oxfam Canada and the AIDS Committee. Within the next few months, I am hoping to develop a program which organizes Youth Gender and HIV/AIDS workshops with youth in my city. I plan to work with centres inside the city, and hopefully, if successful, I will expand to other areas and develop specific workshops for different and more diverse audiences.
I am also a volunteer with my Provincial Health Care organization, where I volunteer at the General Hospital, Rehabilitation Centres, and the Children's Hospital. I am a Big Sister with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Eastern Newfoundland. I love working and being with children and I aspire to become a pediatric oncologist.
I have a lot of experience working and volunteering in Gender, HIV/AIDS, Youth Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health,and Children's Rights, as well as a large amount of knowledge on advocacy and campaigning.
I hope that my trip to Australia will broaden my knowledge and open many doors to other interesting and compelling areas, where I may now be limited.
