Flash back 2003-Michael Kumeh, addressing a cross section of Liberian on the use of children as child soldiers.
The news widespread when the where about of Child Rights Activist, Michael Kumeh, who is the Director of the Voice of the Children unearthed, when he held an Interview with Front page Africa in the United States concerning the welfare of the children of Liberia. He flew Liberia in October 2005, after he survived several threats on his life. Our Staff Reporter, James Williams. The Breaking News on the Frontpage Africa, based in the United States, held an exclusive interview with Child Rights Activist, Michael Kumeh, when he spoke to the FPA reporter on Wednesday June 28, about children affected with cleft by natural birth and from the civil war.It was from the publication of that interview, many Liberian who known Kumeh realize that he was alive and outside the country into the United States. According to our reporter, Kumeh departure from Liberia raises many concerns, making his organization in Liberia to play low profile, and referring to him as the sacrificial limb for his brave advocacy while in Liberia.
Another youth said, he was at the same constituency, Kumeh's voted during the 2005 October elections, he continue to inform our reporters, that he didn’t believe that Kumeh's left Liberia directly to the United States, owning to the fact that the difficulty to obtain a US Visa, I though he flew to neighboring country like the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, or Guinea, thank God he toke a sound decision to leave Liberia. All effort to contact his family and closed associates, our reporter was routinely denied to get Kumeh contact in the United States, we were able to interview a very closed associate, known to be his best friend, and the next person to head the Voice of the Children very soon, he agree to grant us an interview, but preferred anonymity, for fear of threats of what he descript as the same people who threaten Kumeh’s life are still around, and this time in key positions, so if I am to be interview, I preferred anonymity. He lamented that prior to the Voice of the Children, Executive Director and Founder, J.Michael Kumeh departure from Liberia, he spend most of his time with the Director, I personally arrange his travel from Liberia, after obtaining a US visa, including his personally belonging, his wife and children were at my house. I was at the airport before the flight departs. Moreover, our reporter knew the actual story of the Youth activist, Michael Kumeh, who founded the Voice of the Children in 1998, to speak for children rights along with many child rights activists, some activists are in and out of the country, due to physical abuse, couple with harassment and detention by forces lawyer to Former President Taylor, who is allegedly charge by the UN for war crime. During his administration, Kumeh critics against the them Taylor’s government for using children as child soldiers, another report gather by our reporter, in 2003 he was taken and torture at a military barrack for his advocacy.
In addition, sources closed to our reporter, reveal that in 2003, Kumeh was appointed by Charles Taylor to serve him as his Youth Advisor, at the time of Kumeh’s appointment, Taylor was being attack at two fronts by LURD, coming from one side, while MODEL coming the other side, during his appointment to serve Charles Taylor, a week after Taylor appointed him, he later rejected the position on ground that he could not serve such a position in the midst of advocacy as head of a child rights group, based on the rejection, he continue to be very vocal, and several threats on his life at the time, was descript as difference intention for rejecting the youth advisor position. To conclude our profile on Kumeh, his closed associate said that by 2005, all of us thought that things were okay, the issue that involve Taylor’s son in-law and financial, Edwin Snowne who was serving as Managing Director of Liberia oil company, requested that Kumeh’s serve as false evidence on his behave after he accuse the wife of Charles Taylor, Jewel Howard Taylor planning to kill him, this created a National concern, and following the investigation, Kumeh was found not guilty, only to realize that Snowne wanted to have the UN attention exclude him from the UN travel ban, to conclude our interview, we finally quizzed Kumeh’s associate, to find out how soon we expect to see the Director return in the future, knowing that many of the people he had problem with are in key positions. The fact that many Liberian who suffer such a treatment might like to return home but here the question many are asking is “Can the security gap created by UNMIL seeming contentment be bridge, some residents in Monrovia and other foreign nationals have good reasons to run to their bedrooms even as early as 8:00pm nowadays. They are not protected against armed robbers that reverberate their communities with gunshots in attempts to rip off valuables, but they are also not protected against hordes of machete-brandishing marauding gangs that prowl the communities, major city through fares, and street with busy nightlife, hacking hapless residents. If UNMIL is really going to downsizing it’s 15, 000-strong UN peace keepers, it will seems overwhelmed by terrorist gangs comprising mainly ex-fighters, will pose danger for the security of Liberia. Cognizant of these unbridled spates of violence in so-called peace time Liberia, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan reported to the Security Council June 20, 2006 that Liberia’s security remains fragile, the reporter concluded.
