About Me |
I'm Burge Abiral and I'm 22 years old. I was born and grew up in Istanbul, probably the most beautiful city in the world (and in Turkey). I'm currently studying anthropology at Williams College, MA, so I'm traveling back and forth between my two homes and going through quite a bit of culture shock (and of course jetlag) every time I switch to the 'other' culture.
I have always been an avid traveler eager to discover different worlds, cultures, and perspectives. I'm a fan of intercultural learning and any kind of international exchange program, esp. international voluntary workcamps.
Upon visiting Tanzania for a winter term class, I've started to develop a passion for social change and I'm currently exploring the opportunities for action. Starting September 2009, I will be studying abroad with IHP Rethinking Globalization, a program that will take me to Tanzania, India, New Zealand, and Mexico to study the effects of globalization by looking at cultures, international development, and environmental issues.
I hope to continue anthropological work on development, indigenous rights, and HIV/AIDS with a focus on Latin America and Africa.
