I am an English teacher in inner city Los Angeles at an alternative charter high school. In addition to teaching compostition and reading comprehension I try my best to live a mindful loving life style, another daunting task. I work as a English teacher in an alternative high school in inner city LA. My goal is to teach youth to develop a voice, and to cultivate self-love. I believe that education is the root of change I am always looking to create community, to learn, and to grow. What a simply yet daunting task, describing myself to a world of strangers. I am an English teacher in inner-city Los Angeles at an alternative charter high school. In addition to teaching composition and reading comprehension, my goal is to teach youth to develop a voice, and to cultivate a sense of self-love. I deal with brilliant, confused teenagers who have spent most of their life being told that they are worth nothing. I am passionate about what I do. I believe that education is the root of change; I know that I change a life once a day. I am a volunteer for Artivist—a collective non-profit dedicated to merging art and activism to increase global consciousness (you like that? it took our talented PR guy a week to work that out). We host a film festival yearly that showcases the work of talented, often unknown filmmakers from across the globe. Child advocacy, human rights, environment issues, human advocacy—no stone is left unturned. We offer a cornucopia of educational and inspiration films for the liberal activist. (cornucopia—my favorite of the five dollar words). I live an play in Los Angeles. I attempted to maintain a blog for a while—but I never managed to muster more than a half-hearted entry schedule. I missed the MySpace craze—and now often protest out of novelty. Additionally, many of my students are avid users, and frankly—that got way weird. (I sound like an English teacher, no?) I am an amateur Africa hand drummer, and have been inactively learning to play the guitar for two years now—though I rock a mean claves. For a while a entertained a lifestyle as a cynical artist, and while I have dropped (most) of the angst, I retained much of the sculpture skills. I enjoy graffiti art (a by-product of inner city students), political murals, and other acts of general vandalism. I design jewelry, and in an attempt to keep my consumption down am learning to sew for myself. I paint enthusiastically, and once, long ago, I could render in 3d beautifully. I am passionate about music, all kinds, all forms. I think that music creates a universal language with which to share passion. I try to keep a beat, a flow, a harmony in every motion of my life. I try my best to live a mindful, loving life another daunting task. I am always looking to create community, to learn, and to grow.
