In 2002 in a project supported The National youth service corps (NYSC) was established in 1973 with the objective of raising a class of patriotic, morally and physically disciplined young people from among the in-school youth aged up to 30 years. NYSC promotes National unity integration and development and recruits young people that have successfully completed various certificate diploma/degree examinations from Nigeria Academic Institutions. All newly recruited young graduates are posted to all 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. About two years ago, NYSC collaborated with UNICEF and other partners in the Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS prevention and care project inititive to increase the knowledge of young people in order to reduce the spread of HIV in Nigeria. In 2002 the project provided a 2 day orientation for all corps members in the 37 NYSC camps nationwide as well as 6 days skills training as peer education trainers for 2407 selected corps members in 7 pilot states These trained corps members were posted to schools to train and mentor peer educators mostly in rural communities. I started out in this Project as a Peer Educator Trainer, later a Facilitator/Resource Person. Today I am the Initiator of Youth Empowerment Forum, A Youth Focused NGO based in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria. I am a consultant to UNICEF Nigeria in the NYSC Project.
