About Me   About Me
David completed his B.A. in economics and finance at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. After graduation, he worked in the international financial markets trading commodities. He then travelled to Europe and for 10 years was employed within the Pharmaceutical/Consumer Goods industries as marketing/sales and business development manager for Germany, Greece, Turkey and the eastern European countries.

In 1994, he completed his MBA at Clemson University, South Carolina and started his PhD in Social Informatics/Cognitive Psychology in at the Human Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA). His research, funded by the European Commission, focuses on the social impact of ICTs (Information and Communications Technology), specifically internet technologies and online communications. He is concentrating on global and local youth movements and the use of new media/technologies to enhance advocacy, reduce poverty and increase economic empowerment.

During 2002 – 2004, he completed Finance and Strategic Management certificates at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the USA.

Exploring the new trend of media convergence, David joined the dot com frenzy of the late 90’s and founded an internet media company in Munich, Germany. He partnered to form a magazine publishing and TV production company focusing on cross-channel strategies and aligning traditional with new media channels.

Before joining UNAIDS as Web Manager, David was the Global Head of eCommunications for a large Swiss pharmaceutical company responsible for all online media and communications development. His main focus was online/offline integration, online branding and campaigns, and global/local alignment.

At UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, Geneva, Switzerland as Web and Internet Communication Manager he succeeded in:

Global Achievements:

• Define technical and functional specifications for online communications and IT inputs, outputs, internal processes and quality assurance standards to include 1.) hire and manage multifunctional project team to redesign of the external and internal web site 2.) redesign of web related projects as required
• Develop a training curriculum for regional/country online media production, evaluation and production specifically to fit the UNAIDS editorial and technical standards (Microsoft CMS)
• Define UNAIDS online branding and communications guidelines and advises regional offices on web policies and communication/PR opportunities

Communication Achievements

• Develop and initiating new online marketing strategy focusing on US and international markets
• Submitted the strategy for a major UNAIDS global intranet project.
• Develop international guidelines and standards for local online branding, marketing/advocacy campaigns and search engine optimization (Russia, China, India and South Africa)
• Developed the implementation model for multimedia functionality including interactive modules, streaming video, webcasting (internal meetings), Skype conferencing and podcasting

Cross-Functional Achievements

• Official UNAIDS participant at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
• Defined UNAIDS’ CEB report on WSIS and United Nations Group for the Information Society (UNGIS)
• Participated in the ReachOut program; a WSIS commitment of the British Council
• Executive member of the UNIADS staff organization

In 2007, David founded Eighty20.org in Geneva, Switzerland; a privately funded, non-profit foundation that advises on, develops and funds global and CBO projects that facilitate social knowledge sharing between key global and local players. Focus is on socially beneficial multimedia/interactive projects that have a strong local impact on preventive health, social empowerment, poverty reduction and capacity building/eLearning using the latest social media tools including Internet-based virtual worlds (Second Life), social networking, web/skypecasts and web-based community sites.

Currently, eighty20.org is managing/implementing several grassroots and educational projects including:

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), New York, NY, USA

Production of a 48 minute documentary film on gender issues supported by a gala event (Mexico City, Mexico, Aug2008), KOL panel discussion, multilingual DVD containing the film and bonus material and an interactive webservice/eLearning portal.

Face of AIDS Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden

Long-term (1982-2012) global online multimedia project with the aim to document, preserve and present the ‘digital history’ the social, economic and developmental impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Main elements include the design of a digitalization and classification process, creation of non-commercial and commercial products and services, creation an interactive web/community platform using latest Web 2.0 and ICT technologies, online public relations and branding initiatives and establishing academic and network partnerships. Initial partner includes the Harvard School of Public Health Harvard Countway Medical Library, UNAIDS, UNFPA, and the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

United Nations System Chief Executives Board, Geneva, Switzerland

Unified UN Internet Presence (UN1) - Knowledge sharing project that will redefine and create common content standards within UN agencies and their constituents. Project includes development of an online communications and community platform that will aggregate several sources of multimedia information, allow the individual filtering and dissemination of custom feeds defined by themes, keyword and geopolitical metadata. Once completed, this project will be developed for local use within local projects. Partners and technology include Google (Gmapplets, Google MAPS AJAX API) and Yahoo (PIPES - GUI-based interface for building custom apps that aggregate Web feeds)
