About Me |
The Solid Waste Management Project, under the Environment and Urban Services Program of the Ayala Foundation is founded on the need to provide sustainable solutions through combined efforts and resources of all sectors in the community. As a community develops, degradation of the environment oftentimes becomes inevitable. This Program enables the Ayala Group of Companies to implement environment-related projects such as the Solid Waste Management (SWM).
The SWM aims for the reduction of solid wastes that go to dumpsites through segregation, recovery and recycling. It is being implemented in two areas where Ayala has a strong presence: Makati City and Cebu City. Makati’s SWM Program started in 1996 by adopting a Donor-Beneficiary Scheme, where Ayala-managed building establishments donate segregated recyclable materials to communities who gain additional income from the sale of the materials. While income generation is important, the project is envisioned as an ecological enterprise or “eco-enterprise,” giving high priority to waste management and recycling. In early 2001, the Program expanded to include the non-Ayala managed buildings in the Makati Central Business District, which consists of 365 buildings and a commercial center complex. The Program encourages the buildings to practice waste segregation at source and provides support mechanism to ensure segregated collection through a linkage with recyclers or recyclable materials consolidators.
Cebu’s SWM Program on the other hand, is being implemented in collaboration with Cebu City local government, Barangays Hipodromo and Luz, under the Good Neighbor Project of Cebu Business Park and Neighboring Barangays Altruistic Alliance Inc. The program aims to address social concerns by generating employment and livelihood opportunities through waste segregation and collection.
