The African Rural Development Movement (ARUDMO) works with women, youth and rural communities in Africa to provide education, training and resources for economic, political and personal empowerment. Background ARUDMO was founded in 1995 in response to growing poverty, declining quality of life and prevalent corruption and inequality in Africa. The organization is led by a network of country representative in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Kenya and South Africa. ARUDMO's headquarters is located in Accra, Ghana and is operated under the leadership of Founder & President, David Atieku, and Program Director, Brett Nobbs. Accomplishments Key program highlights at ARUDMO include the following: # Created six plants for the mechanical processing of cassava in eastern Ghana, which resulted in the training of 60+ women and a 60% increase in income for these families. # Renovated a primary school in the Ashanti region of Ghana, including structural and cosmetic improvements, donation of textbooks, and funding assistance to teachers, to help ensure quality education for 125+ underserved students. # Established farming cooperatives in four villages in Ghana, training 40+ villagers in the harvesting, treatment and storage of maize. Net profits during the cooperative's first year amounted to 1.1 million Ghanaian cedis per person. # Partnered with Ministry of Agriculture in Ghana to provide seeds and technical assistance for the farming and production of cowpeas in six villages. The project successfully reached over 200 people and trained 50+ people in cowpea farming and production. Areas of Activity ARUDMO develops and implements sustainable development initiatives in the following areas: # Economic Empowerment including development of information technology (IT) centers, agricultural projects and microfinance lending programs that encourage entrepreneurship. # Political Empowerment including referrals to local NGOs working with women, youth and rural communities to encourage civic engagement. # Personal Empowerment including health projects that encourage individuals to protect themselves against diseases. Strategies and Tactics 1. ARUDMO program activities are centered around education, training and the provision of resources to ensure sustainability. 2. 2. ARUDMO utilizes international volunteers who can enrich projects through their diverse expertise, perspectives and life experiences, while also providing a source of voluntary labor and income to support general operating expenses. 3. ARUDMO's projects are community-driven and developed in response to needs and requests from local leaders and NGO's. Project Characteristics ARUDMO projects meet the following criteria. # Designed to be sustainable with long-term benefits that do not rely on outside involvement and can be managed by the community. # Accessible to all community members, especially those who have limited resources. # Identified by the community and needs-driven. Volunteer Volunteers provide a source of expertise and labor for ARUDMO projects. Volunteers must apply for placement and commit to work for a period of 3 months, 6 months or 1 year. Volunteers donate their time and expertise based on a reciprocal system of exchange. In addition, volunteers are responsible for lodging, food and expenses related to their work with ARUDMO. These costs generally amount to $600-$1,000 month.
