ABOUT ME: My name is Amani Obeid and I am a 20 year old currently living in Canada. My family and I emigrated to Canada 11 years ago in hopes of a better future and a better education. I am a Muslim Canadian-Palestinian, and was born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I love the sciences, especially chemistry. I have a strong passion for learning new languages. I currently speak Arabic, English as well as French. I enjoy swimming, playing the violin in various string ensemble groups. During my high school years, I enjoyed being a part of "Radio Rams", which was my school's radio announcement crew. I delighted in participating in various peer programs at my school such as the Peer Helping, Peer Mediation, as well as the Violence Prevention program. I love being involved in extra-curricular activities. Afterall, there are things that can never be learned from text-books. I believe that being a contributing member of society is the key to living life to the fullest. I developed a passion for studying chemistry and biology after my exposure to senior level science courses in Grade Eleven. Now, my primary educational goal is to earn my Undergraduate Degree in Biochemical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. I am currently combining the Engineering degree with a Major in French. When I finish my post-secondary education, I hope to enter the bio-pharmaceutical industry, where I will be able to combine my passion for chemistry and biology in the research, development and manufacture of medicinal products. I am a person who thrives on involvement with other people, especially here at the university. I love being a part of the MSA (Muslim Students' Association). This year inshallah (God Willing), I will be taking care of the MSA's Radio show at the university. Inshallah, it will be a wonderful and fulfilling experience. My intention with the radio show is to hopefully discuss issues that are misunderstood by the non-Muslim community. I pray that Allah (God) will help me inshallah. As well, I am currently involved with SPHR here at UWO. SPHR is "Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights". SPHR is a non-profit, student-based organization that advocates on a strong social justice platform to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people in the face of human rights violations and all forms of racism, discrimination, misinformation and misrepresentation. I hope that through this group I can make a difference for the Palestinian people. I also hope to better understand the Occupation in Palestine. I also hope that next year, I will visit my land. My hobbies are not numerous. I have one that I have been passionate about for 8 years: the violin. I love playing the violin, because I find to be a method of self-expression. I find it quite soothing as well. I primarily focus on playing Baroque music, by the composers Bach and Vivaldi. I have a tendancy to play music that stirs the heart. Currently, I perform with UWO Symphony Orchestra as a second violinist. How did I found about TIG? I found out about TakingITGlobal recently when I attended the National Technology Youth Leadership Conference (NTYLC) at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in May 2003. NTYLC was the first national conference that I have ever attended, and it was an absolutley rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to meet outstanding young students from all over Canada. I decided to join TakingITGlobal to meet more people on an international level as well as to make a positive difference in the world around me. My primary individual goal is to make a positive difference wherever I go. The most powerful way to make this difference is through becoming an effective role model in one’s community. My involvement in school and community activities has contributed to this goal by giving me the opportunity to develop necessary skills such as leadership and teamwork, as well as interest in innovation, which are vital to becoming a positive role model. I hope to gain valuable experience through becoming an active member of TakingITGlobal. I hope participating with this organization will help me develop the necessary courage not only to accomplish my goals, but to tackle on new challenges in the global community. Thus, there you have it TIG! Amani Obeid within 767 words!
