Over Mij |
I started this peace program at two schools in 2004 called Spread the Peace in which students come together and discuss various world issues, pick a project that they want to work on as a group, and create awareness in interesting ways. So far, we have been successful in raising money and informing fellow students about various global issues. Currently, I am organizing events for students on my college campus to create a better "Me to We" community.
I want to be true to what Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
I know that if I want to make a difference, the change has to start from me, and until my peers and I can see that change, then its something leading to a bigger change outside myself.

Spread the Peace entails inspiring and educating fellow students about global issues. Spread the Peace empowers students with leadership skills in order for them to take action. It is about spreading awareness, knowledge, inspiration, and ultimately peace. This is done through weekly workshops, fundraisers, petitions, and film-screenings held in school classrooms and auditoriums, public streets, libraries, and organizations like Global Kids in support of our projects. We think critically about issues such as environmental sustainability, child soldiers, fair-trade, and important United Nations’ documents. After educating others and ourselves about various issues, we find one issue we are passionate about and brainstorm ways to collectively support the cause. These projects address the need for unity and collective positive action. Spread the Peace gets students excited to talk about a wide range of global issues, think critically about them and devise ways the group can take action.
Some ways we have taken action include organizing film screenings of Invisible Children at the Donnell New York Public Library and facilitating a discussion about the importance of the Conventions on the Rights of the Child document as well as Outlawed, and had speakers from the International Criminal Court talk about the Geneva Conventions, the global war on terror and the use of torture. We also organized a Vow of Silence event, which brought awareness about children’s rights issues and raised more than $460 to donate to Free the Children’s school-building projects in developing countries. More recently, we held a benefit dinner in New York City for Common Ground organization, which helps people find affordable housing opportunities and prevent them from becoming homeless and raised over $500. At Dickinson College, students came together to create artworks that represented what peace means to them or what global issues are important to them. This was sponsored through a grant received by the Three Dot Dash organization—a global peace initiative of the We Are Family Foundation.
