About Me |
Ajay Kamalakaran is a journalist and travel-writer based in Bombay, India.
Writing has always been a passion for Ajay, who started working as a free-lancer from his college days.
He was the editor of the Sakhalin Times in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia from 2003 to 2007. The now-defunct newspaper was the largest and most widely-circulated English-language newspaper in the Russian Far East from 2001 to 2009.
While in Sakhalin, Ajay made guest appearances on the several radio news programmes on BBC's Channel 4.
He is also the author of Sakhalin Unplugged, the first English-language guidebook to the Sakhalin Region.
Ajay also worked for Reuters news from 2007 to 2010, first as a reporter in Sakhalin and then in Bangalore, India. Besides covering environmental and demographic issues in the Russian Far East and the oil and gas industry in Sakhalin, Ajay also covered crime.
In Bangalore, Ajay was in charge of reporting all U.S. overnight equity news for Reuters. While covering the the global financial crisis, Ajay wrote several articles connected with the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the bankruptcies of Chrysler and General Motors as well as major financial acquisitions like Pfizer's takeover of Wyeth.
Ajay loves learning new languages and can manage a decent conversation in 7 different ones including Russian and French.
He is also passionate about music, books, mountain-climbing and has recently developed an interest in long-distance running.
