Forward Minds is a campus student based mental health awareness, education and advocacy organization. We provide neutral space where students can come and access free materials on various mental health issues, and also where students can look up external resources and referrals for further support both on and off campus. By promoting awareness we hope to remove the stigma which surrounds mental illness and to create an open environment where students can discuss mental health issues. This organization targets the entire college community through large-scale educational campaigns such as panel discussions, movie screenings, and awareness programs.
There is no group like this on campus anywhere in Canada. We felt a presence like this was needed because there are student groups which provide support in so many different areas of diversity such as health, sexuality and yet nothing was available on campus for mental health awareness. Our office will act as a drop in centre where students can come and pick up information or browse through out resources for clinics, support groups, etc. Students can look up when office hours are being held on campus, so that there will always be a volunteer present who can assist students with their questions. A group like this is important because college students are the highest risk age group for developing serious illnesses when they start university.
