The primary mission of AAN and its members are to improve the quality of life of PLWHA in Nepal. The fundamental principle guiding the work of AAN is the centrality of PLWHA in decision-making processes that affect their lives. Consequently, AAN is organized and managed by people living with HIV/AIDS in Nepal. AAN aims to improve the quality of life for PLWHA in Nepal by providing opportunities for empowerment, taking control of issues affecting their lives. Empowerment of PLWHA concerns not only health-related issues but the protection of human rights, involvement in the development of policy, non-discriminatory access to the legal and health care system and the education of the wider community. As well, AAN aims to provide a voice for PLWHA at the local, regional and national levels in order to facilitate systemic change in critical areas such as care and support, access to treatments and addressing issues of discrimination in society. Currently, AAN has regional level members and groups in five different provinces of the nation. The membership also includes a representative of the Positive Women's Group, which represents positive women and their in a number of different regions in Nepal. The membership of AAN is open to all Nepalese living with HIV, irrespective of gender, caste, religion or sexual orientation provided that they believe in the mission statement of AAN. This places AAN in a unique position of being able to truthfully represent the needs of PLWHA, having direct and ongoing contact with the positive individuals and groups in the different region and cities. This ongoing and direct contact allows AAN to raise issues affecting PLWHA at the local community level as well as regional and national levels. AAN has focused on objectives such as building the capacity of regional level groups to respond appropriately to the needs of PLWHA in areas such as advocacy, care and support, counseling, raising community awareness, the provision of information and education resources and improving access to the healthcare and legal systems. Implementing this objective has been sustained by the provision of skills building workshops on topics such as basic HIV/AIDS information, governance of community-based organizations, advocacy, and access to treatments and developing media campaigns and understanding the human rights framework. AAN advocates for PLWHA to attend regional, national and international meetings, providing a voice to the positive community, fundamental to developing understand and acceptance. This is not only allows for the sharing of experiences and information but also provides PLWHA with a sense of the larger struggle in combating HIV/AIDS. The changing nature of the epidemic requires informed decision-making and PLWHA need to be at the forefront of debate and involvement if local, regional and national responses are to be effective. AAN is committed to multi-sectorial collaboration and aims to develop strong working partnerships with between non-government organizations, government organizations and the private sector. It is a fundamental objective of AAN to build relationships between PLWHA to their families and the wider community and to improve the capacity of PLWHA and the wider community to more effectively respond to the threat of AIDS.
