David’s berth in voluntary youth service can be ascribed to his participation in the National Youth Consultation for the Millennium Young People’s Congress (MYPC), which was organized by GuyberNet, an information technology and sustainable development training centre. Perhaps, his initiative, leadership potential and originality were the motivating forces behind his co-founding the Millennium Young People’s Congress Support Group and later GuyberClub, the youth arm of GuyberNet. The club was a support mechanism for its parent organisation, as well as a machinery for addressing the ‘Top Ten Priority Issues of Youth in Guyana’, the document which was developed as the platform from which the Guyana youth policy was presented at the MYPC in Honolulu, Hawaii in October 1999. David has served GuyberClub with distinction as its Secretary, Treasurer and past President. Among the projects the club engaged itself in under his term were the ‘Each One Teach One’ Literacy Programme, and the ‘Poverty Outreach Programme’ and the ‘Primary Education Support Programme’, which are to be executed in the coming months. A necessary adjunct to successful youth service is participation in national and regional meetings at which the clarion call for youth concerns are sounded. David is no stranger to such representation. In a bid to find redress for the needs of youth, he attended the Caribbean Federation of Youth Leaders training programme and the Caribbean Youth Explosion in Grenada, and the UNESCO Heads of Federation Sub-regional meeting in Trinidad and Tobago. In continued pursuance of youth participation in democracy, David is involved at several rungs of decision-making. He was elected as the Secretary of the Guyana Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations, an alliance of groups and organisations that share UNESCO’s ideals, which co-ordinates the activities of those constituent groups. Moreover, he has served as with the CARICOM Directors of Youth and as a liaison officer with the Commonwealth Youth Programme. He was a participant in the Youth Rights Consultation on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, organized by the Rights of the Child. At the Carter Centre, an institute for the development of democracy, he volunteered his “youth related” knowledge. Eager still to create a space for youth in this world, David has co-founded the Youth In Development, an organization in which he is the Co-Chairman. This has created avenues for David to become more instrumental in influencing national policy. He functioned as the Co-ordinator of the National Youth Agenda Workshop on the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). Professionally, David intends to be an extension of the volunteer. He is currently pursuing his forte at the University of Guyana: the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. His learning has immediately borne fruit, as he is constantly involved in website construction and maintenance. The youth in development website, www.yid.org.gy is only one instance of his application of his skills to volunteer service. David seems to have found his niche in life, and has dedicated himself, personally and professionally, to filling it.
