This is entirely a profile for Youth Equality Center Uganda. Youth Equality Center is a nonprofit, non partisan youth led rural community Development Organization formed for promoting among others charitable and educational purposes. YEC targets young people, through empowering them with skills in building self esteem, communication and imparts knowledge on leadership and gender issues so the youths can take on leadership roles in their communities. The organization conducts school outreaches, civic education, and teaching about social injustices in society such as domestic violence, gender inequality, child trafficking and promoting alternative and transformative leadership. YEC is also specifically designed to freely engage young men and women on issues of good governance including accountability and gender equality. The organization promote learning, debate and networking with the view to formulate alternative leadership suggestions and advocate for the concerns of young people.
VISION: An enlightened society where women and youths are aware of their rights and duties as citizens of Uganda.
MISSION: To enhance young people's participation in governance and developmental processes in their communities through Advocacy, training, research, and sensitizing communities.
Overall goal:
To create a pro-youth space and empower young women and men to participate in leadership at all levels.
Youth Equality centre grew out of five young alternative and transformative leaders after having been trained and equipped by Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) in 2009 under their mentoring camp for Alternative and transformative leadership that aims at enhancing young people's participation in development at the district and National levels. After the camp, the young leaders mobilized themselves to continue gospel for alternative and leadership, good governance, Gender equality, social justice and social transformation by forming Youth equality centre. YEC has, since her establishment, set out to spread the gospel of good and effective alternative and transformative leadership, Gender equality as well as empowering young people especially young women to take up entrepreneurship and leadership roles in society thus, is actively engaged in democracy, entrepreneurship, civic education, sensitization, leadership and charity activities. Additionally, the organisation has actively engaged in activities that promote pro-poor values, gender equality and social justice. Among these are conducting school outreaches, University dialogues and debates, raising awareness about leadership issues, community sensitization, radio and television talk shows, organizing conferences on leadership and good governance as well as engaging in peaceful demonstrations.
Thus, YEC aims at seeing the youth living their lives meaningfully, it looks at the community challenges faced by the young people and, provision of Reproductive Health Education to young people, is one of its objectives. It is an agency that was established to help the young people Headed by young alternative and transformative leaders.
Our programs:
YEC is actively engaged in democracy, entrepreneurship, civic education, sensitization, leadership and charity activities in her mission to achieve her objectives and vision through three major programs:
1. Youth Leadership building activities.
A series of training programmes in alternative and transformative leadership have been developed and will be implemented to raise the level of gender consciousness among the youth to manage the consequences of conflict more efficiently; define their identity as individuals and as youth; monitor the development programmes in their areas; participate in the decision making processes; analyze their local government resource distribution and prepare themselves for leadership roles in their communities. YEC empowers young people through conducting school outreaches, offering civic education, guidance and counselling and, teaching youths about social injustices; such as domestic violence, gender inequality, child trafficking and promoting alternative and transformative leadership in different communities.
2. The M.A.D Program:
The Making a Difference program (M.A.D) is rooted within YEC members for equalization of opportunities and social integration of all the needy, and persons with disability (PWDS). Through this program YEC embarks on spreading the values of transformative leadership through impacting the lives of the needy vulnerable and cognitively impaired children and elderly.
3. Advocacy:
YEC also collaborates with other youth, women and civil society organizations in advocacy, petitioning and peaceful demonstrations in search for a favourable policies, justice and peace, human rights and, better service delivery.
