About Me |
When I first think about my world, our world actually, I don't really have good words to say. With all the crises, the conflicts, the wars, the inequalities, the corruption etc., we could say our world has been better. Actually can we? A scientist once said that since year 0, there has been less than 100 years of total peace around the world. All the problems that are happening right now are results of other problems and events that happened before. But, when I think of my world, there is one positive word that I think about: hope. People are more educated than ever and so they can protect themselves against bad decisions from the governments. In the United States, the people elected Barack Obama who actually represents hope, with his idea to change the healthcare system and his opinions about war and about other countries. That shows that our world is changing, that there is still hope that one day, our world will be more peaceful.
When I look at the place where I live, the province of Quebec, I'm really preoccupied. What defines us Quebecois the most is our language, French. My first language is French; I learned to speak English when I was in grade 6. What bothers me is that French has begun to lose influence in the province of Quebec. The massive number of immigrants and the many irregularities in the law about the French language (law 101) are contributing to this problem. Our culture too is in danger, with all the cuts from the federal government. These restrictions make our freedom of expression more difficult than ever. Because of all the reasons I mentioned, I think that it’s a good idea that Quebec separates from the rest of Canada. I’m not writing that because I don’t like English people but because if the French Canadians want to continue to speak French for generations, we have to separate, for our language and our culture, to preserve it. The last two defeats in the referendums (’80 ’95) hurt a lot the population here in Quebec, and many people don’t believe in that idea anymore. I think that if a good leader is elected, like René Lévesque and Lucien Bouchard were, the passion could revive and Quebec could finally be a country. That is my opinion for my part of country, for where I live.
To conclude, my vision of the world, even if it’s depressing, is about hope, for both the world in general and the region where I live.
