I am brazilian, 25 years old and journalist. Was born in São Paulo, the biggest city of South America and a sample of the big gap between rich and poor in Brazil. I started to work as journalist when was 18. At first was a trainee for one year and a half to a newspaper and could get the experience as reporter in different sections as Sports, Entertainment and World. I left this job and started to work on an internet company in 1999, when it was a kind of a "boom" on this new media here in Brazil what was great because I could be part of all the discussions about the use of the new tools that this technology could offer, how to approach the public and trying to make the websites be as usefull and interactive as they could be. After starting as reporter of a website for a TV presentor, I was invited to create a new website to the portal targeted to the teenagers, main target of the portal that had a total audience of 8 million page views daily. Again, it was a great opporunity of evaluating and understanding the internet as a powerful media, specially to this public profile. After 2 years, the external investment on the internet ceased in Brazil and most part of Latin America, so most of the workers were cutted of. I continued as editor of the portal and was invited to work at Uol, the biggest internet company in Brazil but as I was 23 and could receive some severance pay if left my job, decided to get the risk and get this money to invest in my studies making then an old objective of living overseas come true.
I went to live in Sydney to improve my English at first and complemented my studies with a Post Graduate in Marketing of 6 months later on. For being a very multicultural city, to live in Sydney was the best experience I ever had because could understand much more about cultural, social, economical and political differences and similarities in the world from a very different perspective that I had before bacause from then on all the nationalities had a face to me. Even doing some free-lances to a brazilian website focused on the brazilian students living in Sydney, my main income came from a job at a home, from which I learned many important things from the elderly, aged between 75 and 95 years old.
When I left Australia, I had the oportunity of doing a short round-the-world trip of 4 months through New Zealand, Thailand, England, Netherlands, Germany and Italy, what was amazing for the opportunity of seeing and having contact with persons and going to places that I just knew from books, documentaries or even didnpt know that existed before.
I came back to Brazil on the beggining of July, after one year and a half away, and has been quite strange being back to everything that I left behind because everything is very familiar and I feel very different from that person that left here. But talking to all the other travellers and backpackers that I met, this sensation is quite normal and is hard to consider such an experience just as a holiday because to see the world through so many different perspectives and talking to persons that live in so many different realities is something that is impossible just to forget about.
So, my main objective is trying to find a way of using all my personal and professional experience to work for something that I believe and feel that am contributing, somehow, to other people´s lives. After my experience at the home, I know the precious value of this sensation.
