i know that i am somewhat of an idealist, hoping, striving for a world that may never come to be in my lifetime... but still, it is for tomorrow that i will not throw my confidence away! studying psychology, painting and sculpture, i am working my way towards becoming an art therapist with specific focus on trauma, memory and motivation. my bachelor treatise focuses on art therapy and male sexual offenders from a psychoanalytical and cognitive behavioural therapy perspective.
it is my faith in Jesus, the hope of glory, and my deep-felt and incredibly personal compassion for survivors of sexual abuse as well as my discontentment with not only the horrors of human rights abuses, but also the apathy that condones it, that i am involved in a non-profit organization, rape outcry.
taking hold of the awesome opportunity to study at the universität osnabrück in from october 2009 to march 2010, i will be running an awareness and fund-raising event in the form of an art and poetry exhibition in the university’s library.
i wish to use what i learn and experience to not only encourage survivors in their journeys through creative expression; but also – and more controversially – use art therapy with sexual offenders who desperately need to get in touch with the powers that compel them to cause such devastation... and to stop. after all, for too long we society has shamed survivors, instead of shifting the blame to perpetrators.
