About Me |
"I believe that you can say to the founders of this great nation, 'Here I am, a youth, a young tree whose roots were plucked from the hills of Lebanon, yet I am deeply rooted here, and I would be fruitful.'" Gibran Khalil Gibran
To be fruitful throughout my life is an important goal of mine. Since I was a young girl it was ingrained within me that I was to be a proud Lebanese, to cherish my heritage and my Arab upbringing. But just as much I was told to appreciate my American heritage and country because I was also "deeply rooted here." To be a Lebanese-American was always my pride and joy throughout my school years. My peers all knew about the girl who always gave reports on her heritage. I loved to describe the beautiful culture that I come from. The infamous olive and cedar trees. The intricately designed buildings with gorgeous architecture. The mouthwatering dishes that Lebanese grandmothers were renowned for. Every detail of my upbringing seeped through my veins and glimmered upon every aspect of my life. However, where was I living? What language did I speak? Where was I attending school? All these questions were answered in the same tone. I live in America. I speak the universal language. I attend the American educational system. I am an American. America is just as much a part of me as my skin and bones. I have lived in the U.S. for 18 years, and I'm only 21. I literally grew up with Sesame Street episodes, Barbie dolls, McDonald's Happy Meals, and Disney movies. Embedded within me were American roots with a Lebanese heritage. Both cultures complemented and strengthened each other and yet stood on their own. I would not be who or where I am today without the fusion of each world.
