For the record, I hate writing bios!!!
Now where do I begin? I was born in NYC but now reside in CT. I worked corporate world for 10 years before I realized it was no longer for me, which led me to my current position as a Prevention Research Educator (PRE). Walking away from that world was one of the best decisions I ever made. I now have a wonderful opportunity to work with urban youth of color and it has been an incredible experience. As a PRE, I teach youth graduate-school research skills about issues in their community that they want to change and help them develop action plans to initiate that change. The methods are based on the study of anthropology and we teach them how to conduct the following: fact gathering interviews, non-obtrusive observation, surveys, visual documentation, and pile-sorting. Through these methods, they also develop critical thinking skills, group cohesion, negotiation, and problem solving.
On a personal note, I am a musician, singer/songwriter, and poet. I also conduct creative writing workshops at various colleges and universities throughout the US. As a poet I am heavily involved in the spoken-word poetry circuit and have traveled extensively performing at well-known venues all over the country including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC. I have completed my first spoken word CD and my first book of poetry and have begun working on my next book, CD and novel.
