 About Me |
It feels like there is not enough time in the day to make things better. It would be so easy to just lay back and watch the world go by, or to sip a latte and disengage and feel smug with my latest purchase. But I was never very good at looking the other way. While there are people in prison for expressing their beliefs, while there are children going hungry and while the planet is warming, I feel compelled to act.
I started working at the age of 12 and I haven’t stopped. Since I was very young, I started things – school clubs, youth groups and small businesses. And now, a few dozen years later, I’m looking back and taking stock.
I’ve cleaned washrooms, made popcorn, and played Santa’s Helper. I’ve worked in theatre, assisted disabled adults and children and studied to be a nun. I have written and edited several publications related to social and environmental issues and given dozens of speeches. I have provided policy advice to governments and foundations on subjects as varied as forestry, human rights, peacebuilding and AIDS. I’ve founded organizations, supported others in doing the same and I’ve sat on more boards and committees than I can count. I’ve lived and worked in countries in Latin America, South Asia and South East Asia – but I’ve never been to Africa. I’ve got a BA from Simon Fraser University, a Masters in Management from McGill and a French certificate from L’universite de Laval (although I still can’t speak French fluently). I’m a mother, a step-mother and a god-mother. I’ve been named to the top 40 under 40 list in Canada and the top 40 under 40 list in B.C., which were important to me at the time, but now that I’m over 40 - they are just a reminder that I’m getting old.
And while I know that most of the people reading this profile are going to be considerably younger than I am, I don’t think all of my experiences have made me much wiser. I look out at this TIG network and I am in awe of the incredible people who congregate here. They are wise far beyond their years. They are creative, passionate and committed souls.
So, my purpose in coming here, is to be mentored by you. To learn from you and to share what I know with you.
