Over Mij |
Well, yeah, it all started back on a pleasant June afternoon back in '83. After much ruckus and chaos, little Sean was part of the world. Needless to say, some stuff happened and I turned 18. So, I'm sitting in some inane high school class my senior year and I'm thinking, dude, I totally don't want to go to college next year, and I don't exactly want to be a bum either. This gets me thinking, why don't I do the things I dream about instead of sitting in some cold Wisconsin classroom wishing I was anywhere but there.
I decided to take this thought to my parents, who are totally awesome and give me encouragement whenever possible, and they supported my decision and even showed me the right direction. My mom (she's a college counselor sort of) told me she had heard about this program "AmeriCorps" which was kind of like a volunteer organization or something, she didn't know the specifics. So I hop on the internet, and after much futile searching I find the site... www.americorps.org (go figure), and start reading about what it was. I fell hopelessly in love with it and immediately downloaded an application, filled it out, and sent the sucker in.
A few months later, I get accepted to the Southeast campus located in Charleston, SC, I differ my enrollment to college, and wait. Then I get to Charleston and I discover that AmeriCorps is cooler than I ever imagined. I spent 6 weeks doing trailbuilding and bridgebuilding (yes we had to haul lumber with our bare hands down the side of a mountain) in the middle of Appalachia in Pickett State Park, Tennessee - all under the shade of the mountains. My second project was at working at Morningside Middle School in North Charleston. Then the team moved down to Oakland, FL, for an environmental restoration project, followed up by a month in Sebring, FL working with Habitat for Humanity. Finally we spent a month on the north shore of New Orleans working with the 21st Century Learning Center on a summer kids program.
Right now I'm in my second year of college at the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities, working as a Program Advisor for student volunteer activities and service learning. I'm also double majoring in geography and philosophy. I'm also a Student Fellow with Campus Compact, a really cool organization that connects students throughout the country who are interested in civic engagement.
