While in Sigakota, Fiji at Nadroga Navosa Provincial High School, I met four new friends of my own. The four wonderful girls I met (Mereoni, Sallanieta, Apikali, and Nataviri) have changed my life forever. When meeting someone from another country, you don’t just teach them about your homeland and everyday life, they teach you about theirs too, in ways they may not even realize. I never realized how alike everyone in the world is. No matter where you live, or what your beliefs may be, I’ve learned that all human beings share similar thoughts and values. My friends in Fiji reminded me just how important family and education really are, and how we should all do what we can to help our fellow brothers and sisters. Another thing I found surprising while visiting Fiji was how friendly everyone was. Seeing everyone you meet with a smile and welcoming you like you’re a part of their own family is remarkable, and the feeling is indescribable. The local people of Fiji welcomed our delegation, full of American students, with open arms, and hearts. No one noticed the difference of skin color, or clothing, or languages…we only saw each other’s hearts. Since my return home, I look at the world completely different. I’m now aware of the millions upon millions of other lives going on every day, at every moment. Now I see the world as a large puzzle. Each piece is significant and just as important as the other and without just one piece the puzzle, our world, isn’t complete.
