I am an active youth leader in my community in Bulacan, Philippines. I am presently the president of Guiguinto Scholars Association (GSA), a non-government, community-based, youth organization, which focal objective is to help the youth of Guiguinto through community services and educational programs; and to be the Municipality of Guiguinto's ambassadors of goodwill. Last February, the Provincial Youth Development Council Foundation Incorporated or PYDCFI awarded GSA as the "Gintong Kabataan for Community Development", the highest youth recognition given by the provincial government of Bulacan. Part of GSA, we also have Ang Guinto, the official publication of our municipality, where I also perform as the editor-in-chief; this is one form of innovation and development where the youth is involve in civic journalism. We also have Guintong Pandayan, an arts and culture group. We believe that being scholars, we are not just merely to receive grants from respected institutions, but in exchange, we have to extend our arms to let others feel the protection, guidance, and inspiration, to fellow youth. In three years of GSA, we have done many projects that allow youth to participate in socio-cultural issues. Last September 18, 2004, we have conducted a youth convention titled "Tinig-Kabataan" or "Voice of the Youth" where we tackled the different issues of the youth and how to eradicate those problems. Every year, we also have the "Gawad Guintong Pluma" or an essay writing contest to all elementary and high school students of Guiguinto. We also give trainings and workshops on Campus Journalism, Speaker’s Bureau, and Leadership. Every December, we also conduct a gift-giving titled “Guintong Kalinga” to let others feel the presence of Holidays. I am also one of members of the board of directors (youth sector) of Sugod Guiguinto Movement. This organization centers on environment, peace and order, and livelihood of the people of the municipality. In my school, I am the filipino editor of The Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas. I major Journalism and that is why I use this knowledge of communication to effective youth service. I became acquainted with the youth since I entered GSA, because of this organization; I learned to make my life worthy and meaningful because of youth projects. I gained leadership and responsibility, which are very essential in forming a youth organization. My members became my inspirations in performing the task, which I am supposed to do and accomplish. Brotherhood and camaraderie also flourished and I think these are some of the factors why we continue our quest, why we always make services out of our God given talents. Because of my involvement to the society, I learned how to value the time, that each seconds, minutes, hours of the day are very significant and have to be valued. My participation in the community is definitely an opportunity for me to reach out to everyone especially those youth who are in need. I also know how youth reacts, talks, and how they are being motivated and inspired, and these will serve as their foundations to deal with their community like us. We always aim for strong change, strong development. This will liberate the youth to some of the physical, moral, and cultural oppressions. We have to connect them, we have to inform them, and make them realize the true meaning of youth not just the "word" itself, but also its dimensions and scales.
