Over Mij   Over Mij
Software localization project manager. L10N. Over 20 years in translation and interpreting.

I am a professional interpreter, translator, a certified mediator in the State of Georgia, a professional anthropologist, a professional senior consulting archaeologist, a forest archaeologist for Mark Twain National Forest, Rolla Ranger Station, a certified Underwater Archaeologist, a certified scuba diver, a self-taught auto mechanic, Gold medallists in long jump, triple jump and Pole Vault of the Georgia Games, a stand-up comic, an amateur painter and computer graphic artists, the cook of the week in Rolla Daily News, Missouri, and most important of all, a dedicated Rotarian, a Father and a Husband. I hold a bachelor’s degree in history and archaeology from Peking University, one of the most prestigious institution in the country, and a master’s degree in anthropology from Beijing’s Central University of Nationalities, as well as a five years study in a Ph. D. program of Anthropology at University of Pittsburgh. I worked as curator and staff researcher for the Ethnic Minority Museum Preparation Committee, State Commission for Ethnic Minority affairs of PRC. After completing the course work for a Ph.D. in archaeology and anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, I served as senior archaeologist for numerous archaeological and environmental consulting firms prior to his founding of AALS.
Born and raised in the suburb of Harbin, a beautiful colonial city known as the Pearl under Swan’s Neck in the northeast of China, where temperature can average minus 30 to 40 degrees in winter, I was brainwashed as a devoted communist and spent five years in a labor camp being indoctrinated in the benefit of physical labor. I eventually rejected communism and became an outspoken critic of it. I immigrated to the United States to pursue further education at age of 32 and became a U.S. citizen on September 27, 1999.
As I absorbed American culture, I developed a vision: to help bridge the communication gap and promote unity between mainstream American and Asian cultures. I worked as a freelance Chinese/English translator and interpreter to the public and private sector, established Renaissance Consulting Services, offering consultation skills in the areas of archaeology, cultural anthropology, continuing education, public relations, mediation and business negotiation. In 1995 I acquired Asian American Publication, Inc., providing business directories and community resource guides for the burgeoning Asian American population in metropolitan Atlanta and the state of Georgia. That same year, I founded AALS, now Asian American Media Group, Inc., offering a full range of multilingual and multimedia communication services in all languages to private businesses and government agencies around the world, including translation management, interpretation, international business and cultural consulting, full product development (including concept/name/trademark evaluation and packaging), export marketing, software and Web site localization, typesetting and graphic design, foreign language LCD displays and audio/video voice-over production. With this addition, My dream of promoting understanding among cultures - both locally and globally - has become reality. The company’s mission is to promote understanding among cultures by providing single-source communication services that bridge the language gap. The dynamic enterprise culminates my vision to promote understanding among cultures in both the local community and the global marketplace.
AALS is now considered the premier single-source provider of culturally sensitive Asian-English translations and cross-cultural consulting. Clients include ADM, AT&T, GTE, Lucent Technology, GM, Ford and Chrysler Motor Companies, Scientific Atlanta, International Monetary Fund (IMF), AFC Enterprises, CDC, INS, the U.S. Information Agency, the U.S. Patent Office and the U.S. State Department. In early August of 1997, along with other 15 business executives, I joined a trade mission with U.S. Commerce Secretary William Daley to Canada. AALS and I were featured on National Public Radio in the Marketplace Radio program on December 9, 1997. AALS was awarded the Service Firm of the Year in 2006 by Minority Business Development Agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
I am a graduate of Class 2006 of Atlanta Regional Leadership Institute and the honoree inducted in Who's Who of Asian American Communities in Ten Southeastern States of the U.S. in 2007.
I am currently serving as a member of Board of Directors for Asian American Resource Center, Inc. since 1999, Partnership for Community Actions, Inc. since 2004 and National Family In Action, Inc. since 2005. I served as the President of Rotary Club of North Atlanta, a Marketing Advisory Board member for MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority), the President (2003) and Chairman of the Board (2004) of Atlanta Association of Interpreters and Translators. I served as Assistant Administrator of Translation Company Division of American Translators Association (ATA) and Administrator for Chinese Language Division of ATA in 2006-2008. I served as Vice Presidents for Chinese Business Association of Atlanta, Vice President of the Association of Chinese Professionals.
I joined the North DeKalb Rotary Club (now North Atlanta Rotary Club) in July 1997. I have served on a various capacities of the Board of North DeKalb Rotary and am a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Hue Thomas Fellow. I was awarded “Bill Mulkey-Show Rotary Cares” award in 2002. I served as the GSE Team leader for Rotary District 6900 to District 3480 in Taiwan in 2001 and met my beautiful bride Paulina Maychun Guan on that trip. We married first in September in Taipei, with the District Governor of District 3480 preside wedding and then married by Fred McClure of North DeKalb Rotary in October the same year. We now have a two years old son William Mark, who was awarded a Paul Harris fellow at age of 45 days at the Jekyll District Conference in 2002 by Frank Devlin, the Past President of Rotary International and my daughter Tana Tsenghui Guan was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow before her birth!
I am current running for State Senate for Senatorial District 5 of the State of Georgia for the year 2010 elections as a Republican Candidate.
