About Me   About Me
Gilbert Ndahayo brings something unique to his film-making. Ndahayo had no means to bury in dignity his people at Gisozi Memorial Site. He lived for twelve years with the remains of his parents and two hundred other villagers who were massacred together in his home garden. But his early years were spent in a well-educated, modern home (his father was a lawyer and a politician) and yet Ndahayo also knew the tribal home of his ancestors, as he visited his grandfather two times every year. “My grandpa was the last keeper of storytelling at the king’s courtyard,” he writes. “In the evening, he told me stories and legends of my culture, of how people used to live. From him, I learned many storytelling devices that I use in my films.”

Ndahayo has just finished revising his debut 45 min. documentary film “Behind This Convent,” an emotional story of the massacre of his family and friends. He writes, “It is a love letter to the victims of genocide. It is a story that makes you want to find in your hearts the roots of forgiveness and acceptance in the search for healing and social integrity.”

Ndahayo is self-taught film editor and director whose credit ranges from feature to short films, tv shows and commercials at Rwanda Cinema Center in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. In Rwanda, there is only one television station and no film school. Ndahayo founded EAMP RWANDA to collect video testimonies of survivors and witnesses of Rwanda's genocide. He also attend university in Rwanda majoring in History, English and Education.

Ndahayo films have received recognition and awards. His short film “Scars of My Days” was presented at the 2007 New York's Tribeca Film Festival. This film was screened before an audience that included former President Bill Clinton and President Paul Kagame. During the UNPFII, he spoke at the United Nations on matters of genocide and racial discrimination effects with an excerpt of his non-financed film “Behind this convent”. Mr Ndahayo was also awarded “First Time Filmmaker” by 2006 Amakula Film Festival and his screenplay “Scars of silver” for a full feature was selected by the Hollywood acclaimed director Mira Nair's film lab the same year.

Today, Ndahayo wants to pursue five personal dreams: first, to study film in the United States; second, to collect and use visual testimonies of survivors and witness of Rwanda's genocide to overcome prejudices and prevent genocide; third, to complete and publish his book “Victory over vampires”; fourth, to make a feature film about his experience during Rwanda's genocide; and finally, to raise 500,000$ to build a memorial centre in his parents’ garden in the memory of the 200 victims of genocide in his small town.
