About me
I am currently pursuing my MBBS (equivalent to an MD) in India.
Med school has helped me look at India from a different perspective altogether. All my life until med school, I was exposed to the brighter side of my country, the progress, the 10% + urban economic growth, the prospering industries, made me feel India is shaping out to be a super power. Of course it is, but Medical School at a prestigious Government College has made me visualize India from three different lenses – the urban rich, the urban poor and the rural poor. This has made me realize that there is a lot that needs change. There are millions of people in my country that yet have no access to basic necessities such as adequate health care. No doubt the Government is doing its bit, but it certainly is not enough. It lies on us, the future physicians, entrepreneurs and future leaders of India and the world to effect a change. This has been my motivation behind my work at Decimal Foundation (www.decimalfoundation.org)
As I enter the clinical years of med school, I’ve recognized my passion for Public Health and Internal Medicine. This coupled with my love for finance and numbers, and a habit to continuously analyze even mundane things (which gets annoying at times) has helped me realize the importance of sustainability in social projects.
Evaluating the working of an organization or process, and quantifying success in terms of numbers is natural to me. My association with Decimal has taught me how to evaluate social projects with an additional dimension, the number of smiles the endeavor results in!
Moving ahead from here, I want to continue to learn and face more varied challenges that social projects will have to offer. As I enter my clinical years in med school, I’m leaning more towards using this exposure to understand what really moves people, what their needs are, but more importantly, how they want those needs fulfilled. The human contact aspect of my coming years is very exciting for me, and I am looking forward to it!
