The Sivulinuut Elders Society, Inuit youth and the University of British Columbia are working on a two year project which involves researching, writing, and filming the history of Arviat, Nunavut and the Kivalliq region from the Inuit point of view.
The name of our project is “Nanisiniq: Arviat History Project.” Nanisiniq, meaning discovery in English, was chosen as our project name by the Inuit elders of Arviat. Using the concept of discovery is fitting because the project aims to inspire Inuit youth to embark on a journey to discover their very own version of Arctic history.
Discovering this history, and hence the title, Nanisiniq (Discovery) is important for many reasons.
It is hard to know who you are if you lose touch with your history and culture. Inuit youth are living in a challenging world. Being confronted with Qablunaat (people from southern Canada) culture at every turn makes knowing who you are and where you come from even more important, as Inuit youth struggle with all the problems and challenges found in communities all over Nunavut. And as you will see, they also have a lot of talent!
That is why we will be sharing this discovery with Inuit youth all over Nunavut, as well as with young people in Southern Canada interested in finding out about the history of this community. Canadians don’t know enough about the colonial history of the Arctic, but ‘the Arctic’ makes headlines nearly every day of the week.
To answer the many questions that we have about our past, we plan to interview Inuit elders from Arviat and Qablunaq who used to live in the Arctic during the 1950s-1970s. Later in the year, we have a few plane tickets booked to travel across Canada in search of historical documents, photographs and film footage. In particular, we are interested in visiting the NWT Archives in Yellowknife, Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. We are also filming our experiences to share our journey with other Inuit youth and elders from across the Arctic and to the people of world.
