Mazhar also is a member of the Alliance for Development [RAD – World Bank] and a representative of the Advocacy Component Project in Upper Egypt.

Mazhar has always felt a strong yearning towards direct service to humanity. In 1999, he came by chance upon an article in the UN's publication indicating their urgent need for volunteers in the Upper Egypt as well in Kenya. He saw his time and place; his future, his life, took clear shape… The first major moves began on September 12, 1999, when he posted some letters to Rotary International/Africa Office, his parents and certain close friends, informing them that at the beginning of the winter he would join hands as a humanitarian in Nairobi, Kenya and in Upper Egypt as a desire to help those less fortunate there.

Shock, puzzlement, and alarm were the first response to theses letters. Despite all the resistance and protestations he encountered, in January 2000, he started his work as a humanitarian in Kenya and founded the Rotaract Club of Assiut, Upper Egypt.

Mazhar's main contribution to the human rights cause is the Arabic edition of the Child-Friendly Text UN Disability Convention [Draft 13 (September 2007)]. Mr. Mazhar El-Shorbagi, Vice-Chairperson of the United Nations Youth Club wrote this text, in coordination with UNICEF's Voices of Youth to help make sure that children with and without disabilities know about the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Today there are more than one million Arab young adults and children gained there own copy of that booklet [This treaty is which guarantees the rights of some 650 million people worldwide and so, this booklet is marks a major milestone in the effort to ensure equal enjoyment of all human rights & fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities]. Moreover, Mazhar has formulated the Child-Friendly Text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in honor of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights [This child-text is a long-awaited contribution in the Arab world on the path toward international human rights norms to be truly universal & applicable for all].
