In a world of unprecedented scientific innovation it seems senseless that the human race continues to be compromised by death and illness from disease. Our goal is to inspire, educate and influence the eradication of human disease. The potential for such a change in human priorities is based on the idea that human beings are part of a super organism; a global brain, a theory put forth by Howard Bloom in a book by the same name (highly recommended). A “global brain” is already in motion but only a tiny percentage of it is working on eliminating the diseases that seriously compromise the human organism as a whole. A lone individual, even one working in scientific research, would not be able to develop the solution to this crisis. However, getting many people excited about scientific research might. At the moment only a very small percentage of the population of the planet is engaged in research - say 0.1%. There are far more people in business! Imagine if people were as attracted to careers in science as they are to fashion. Imagine the progress that could be made if the number of people in science jumped from 0.1% to 1% or 10%! We are in 2003 and the wonders that Arthur Clark imagined for 2001 are not yet a reality. Did he make a mistake? I don't think so. I think he was conservative in his predictions; WE made a mistake! The reason why these things are not yet a reality is because we are greedy. Man is greedy. Man is not concerned with development. The only development people are concerned with is their own, personal development, which, they figure, will be achieved more quickly via money. If we could stop being greedy for 5 minutes and opened our eyes, we would see that there are people dying as we speak; 15.000 people acquire AIDS each day in the world! A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds in Africa; these people need help. If we stopped being so greedy and opened our eyes we would see that if we worked together in scientific research we would see an unbelievable advancement in science in only a few years. And, in reality, these people are not being greedy; they are being shortsighted, because the scientific/technological advancements that they would experience, would actually benefit them more than if they worked for money. This group is interested in creating a dramatic interest in scientific research –a movement that could realize unbelievable advancements in only a few years, and would do more to benefit us as groups and as individuals than any amount of money. If we can capture the imaginations of our cultural opinion makers and influence our political leaders to invest in this prerogative, the changes we would witness would be mind-boggling… Mario Ribeiro Founder: Science Alliance http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thesciencealliance thesciencealliance@yahoogroups.com
