Lockey White started Smart Mediary Systems in March 2000, when she was in her second year of law school. She observed how public interest lawyers made the most of the few resources they had via an efficient system for document-sharing. "Why not take this system out of the realm of 'who knows who' and put it online?" she mused. Shortly after, Smart Mediary Systems' first knowledge marketplace, Briefsmart, was formed. The only one in the United States to receive the "Innovation in Youth Employment Award" from the Youth Employment Summit in Alexandria, Egypt, her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for problem-solving knows no geographic barriers. Her #1 goal right now is the creation of sustainable self-employment opportunities via widespread adoption of people-powered digital content marketplaces. Currently serving as President for Smart Mediary Systems, she is also a board member for the International Young Professionals Foundation in Australia and is a co-founder of SustainUS, the U.S. youth voice for sustainable development. In the past she has served as Project Manager for the Center for Environmental Economic Development, Apprentice Mediator for the Center for the Resolution of Environmental Disputes, and Environmental Law Clerk for Davis Wright Tremaine, one of the nation's top law firms. She has also performed treaty analysis for the International Environmental Law Project, is a Morris K. Udall Scholar for excellence in environmental policy, and was awarded a Natural Resources Law Scholarship from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. She graduated from Humboldt State University in 1998 with highest honors (G.P.A. 3.9) where she worked as a Teaching Assistant for courses on Environmental Economics, Sustainable Business, and Economics of Sustainable Societies. She has a Doctorate in Jurisprudence with a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law, a Bachelors of Science in Natural Resources Management Policy, a minor in International Relations, and 200 hours in mediation, facilitation, and dispute resolution training.
