VISION.

INTRODUCTION.

Kibera Community Youth Programme is a local community based organization [CBO] formed and run by youths in Kibera slums and its environs of Nairobi hence its uniqueness. We are registered under the office of Vice President and Ministry of Home Affairs,Heritage and Sports,Department of Social Services.Ref:DSS/NP/5/4/VOL.1V/2002/(217)

Kibera is one of the largest slums in the world and as a result, it faces numerous problems of urbanization just as any other city dwelling places

As youths of Kiberaand its environs, we sat down and resolved to work together under the umbrella of KCYP to solve and tackle some of the problems affecting the slum dwellers and us in general. Eg –Environmental conservation and management

-H.I.V/AIDS pandemic

On HIV/AIDS, the scourge is highest among the 20-45 year age group, which forms the pool of trained human resources. The country is already feeling the impact of Aids through an estimated 500-700 deaths per day. An estimated one million children are Aids orphans [2001]. The highest percentage of city dwellers resides in the slums and it is known that the most prone and affected people are youths.

KCYP will work towards the formation of a theatre group and soccer team as a form of social responsibility; the two will be used to sensitize Kibera youths and dwellers in general on the dangers of drugs, illegal firearms, domestic violence, child abuse and HIV/AIDS scourge.

KCYP wishes to work together with the existing local and international Non-Governmental Organizations [NGO`S], corporate bodies, foreign missions, religious organizations, local administration and individuals who are mindful of the youths plight, more so the slums youths. We shall also work towards a strong networking links in order to effectively implement our objectives and acquire more information on how best we can manage our projects for the benefit of the community at large.

KCYP is a multi-ethnic and religious organization and this can be seen from its members having both the Muslims and Christians as well drawn from the numerous ethnic groups found in Kibera slums and its environs. It also has room for the persons with disabilities who have also been given responsibilities.

KCYP currently has no formal physical office and uses a room donated to it by a member for the time being together with the postal address to receive its correspondences and our hope is that, very soon we will be able to establish an office and have our physical conduct through the help of wellwishers/donors, the community and the local administration to carry out our activities in a more organized way.

Finally, it was realized that there existed no serious player on matters pertaining the welfare of youths in Kibera slums and its environs, thus the need for an organization that would promote networking and initiate development activities for a mutual course. The idea of KCYP was therefore mooted as a result of lengthy discussions by the youths of Kibera with an aim of discussing their plight, and the fact that the programme developers and policy makers are all youths ensures that the Programmes are in tune with the experiences, needs, concerns and inspirations of youths in Kibera slums and other sorrouded slums includind rural areas.
