I am Jeremias Isaias Mendes, 21, a young HIV/AIDS activist in Maputo, Mozambique. Since 13, I have been actively involved as a peer educator of the Geracao Biz National Youth Program. This multisectorial program involves Ministries of Health, Education and Youth with a financial support of UNFPA. I work with youth in and out of school and provide them with information about sexual reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS. After attending the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok in 2004, I got involved with the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA). I use to be Youth ambassador for UNFPA's Global Youth Partners (GYP). I was involved in research on follow up regarding government commitments to the UNGASS DoC and I organized a National Youth workshop on UNGASS in Mozambique in partnership with Ministries of Health, youth, UNAIDS, Pathfinder International and UNFPA. I was one of the youth representative at the high level meeting held in NY 2006. I am actually working as a youth representative at Municipality on social issues. I have been selected as Mozambican OIYP – Oxfam International Youth Partner and will be attending the Kaleidoscope conference in Australia. The aim of my work is to help young people confront HIV/AIDS, give them skills as well as the capacities to develop as young leaders. I hope to achieve this by getting youth involved in decision making processes on the local, national, regional and global levels.
